14/01/2025: Cloud Cover Limiting Hotspot Detection

Extensive cloud cover across parts of northern Australia is limiting hotspot detection by satellites in these areas. Go to Track Fires > Check Conditions > Smoke and Cloud to check cloud cover. At this time of year hot landscape features and cloud cover can also produce false hotspots from the satellite data but only in a small number of cases.

  • 10-minute hotspot locations on any map may only be accurate to within 2 km
  • The hotspot symbol on the maps does not indicate the size of the fire
  • Some fires may be small, brief, or obscured by smoke or cloud and go undetected
  • Satellites detect other heat sources such as smokestacks
