Abstract Geotiff image of late
(after July 31) fire frequency in northern Australia for the period 2000 - 2024
based on MODIS and MSI satellite sensors. The image has a resolution of 250m
per pixel and each burnt pixle is tagged with an
attribute (Band 1) that corresponds to the number of years that pixel has been
detected as being burnt after July 31st in the 25 year period 2000 to 2024. The
data is based on monthly fire scar mapping and extends across the WA
rangelands, across the entire NT (down to 26 degrees S) and across northern Qld
down to approx. 20 degrees S. The monthly fire scar mapping of landscapes north
of 20 degrees S has been validated by aerial transects and checked using high
resolution imagery across northern Australia.

Lineage Statement The late fire frequency mapping is based
on GIS analysis of monthly burnt area mapping from each of the years 2000 to
2024. This data was produced through summing the individual burnt area raster
grids (in Arc-GIS) from 2000-2024 where grid cells for each year were
attributed with the value of 1 if it had been burnt later than July 31 that
year and 0 if it had not been burnt or burnt earlier than July 31.The burnt
area mapping was based on analysis of imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging
Spectroradiometer on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites and the Multispectral
instrument on ESA's Sentinel-2 satellite. At least two images of different
dates were compared to detect fire affected areas. Image analysing software,
manual inspection of the image and other datasets such as hotspot data were
used to produce the final burnt area product that the fire frequencies are
based on.
