Frequently Asked Questions

How can I view my own line maps (fire breaks, tracks etc.) together with the NAFI fire maps?

There are a few ways to do this:

Upload your maps to NAFI

The first option is to upload your own maps as kml files to NAFI

1. select "View your own maps" in the left hand menu on the NAFI home page

2. select "Upload maps to view on NAFI" and follow the instructions. This section has links to instructions on how to convert your own line maps into kml files

View your own maps and NAFI fire maps on Google Earth

The second option is to view the NAFI fire maps on an application like Google Earth where you can view your won maps as kml files. (You can also view your own maps as shapefiles on Google Earth Pro which is also free to download).

1. select: "Download Data" (in menu above map)

2. select "Data as .kml file" (in left hand menu)

3. select the type of NAFI fire maps you need: e.g. "Current fire data" will download a kml file that links to the recent fire scar and hotspot data

4. open the downloaded file in Google Earth or Google Earth Pro

In the case of the current fire scar data these maps will be constantly updated in your Google Earth display.

View your own maps and NAFI fire maps on a mapping program

The third option is to download the NAFI fire maps as geo-images or shapefiles and to then view them in mapping software like QGIS or ArcMap together with your own maps if you have these as shapefiles.

1. select: "Download Data" (in menu above map)

2. select "Data as image or shapefile" (in left hand menu)

3. select the type of NAFI fire maps you need: e.g. "Fire scars by year" will download a geo-image or shapefile of the current or previous year's fire scars for the whole of north Australia

4. open the downloaded files in your mapping software
